Tenders

Today our school was going to close early due to flooding in the area and I had only 9 students come to school. So another class and my class combined so we could watch a move - Muppets From Space.

(right after Miss Piggie hit a human in the privates)
Student: "Ooohh, he just got hit in the tenders!"

Yeast Infection

In science we're learning about the 5 kingdoms....

Teacher: "Mushrooms, mold, and yeast are part of the fungi kingdom. We all know what mushrooms and mold are, but does anybody know what yeast is?"
Student G: "Is it the same thing as a yeast infection?"

Writing Prompt

In fifth grade, we prepare our students for a writing test at the end of the year. One of the prompts we gave was to: Write about something you enjoy. Here's what one of my students wrote about....

I enjoy having crushs. Because I think it's cool that your in love with someone. But yet your to scared to tell anyone else. There for you will never know, if she loves you back. I'm kind of going through that now. You see theres a girl in my class. Her name is D______. I'm so scared that I won't even tell my own father. That's the tricky part about love, it's so strong it kills you inside.

Reading Small Groups

Today in our reading small groups, discussing the vocabulary for the short story we were about to read....

Reading teacher: "What is a 'stable'?"
(no answers)
Reading teacher: "A stable is a place where animals live. What kinds of animals do you think live in a stable?"
Student N: "A parrot?"

I had to turn away so he didn't see me laugh.....!

Boots

Today I was wearing some leather 3-inch heel boots....

Student D: "Mrs. Tull, what are the shoes you wearin'?"
Me: "They are boots." (and then I showed them to him)
Student D: "Well, I don't like them. They're scary."

It fell from the sky....

Student D: "Mrs. Tull, somebody just threw this at me."
it was a pencil
Me: "Well do you know who did it?"
Student D: "No, it just fell from the sky. It's like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs up in here."

Ghetto-ness

While waiting for my class to be quiet in line...

Student G: "Don't ya'll ever learn? Be quiet!"
Student K: "You can't change ghetto!"


Also, I'm trying to connect with my students and relate to them....they find my attempts very amusing and also respond with laughter...

Me: "Fo' rizzle!"
Student A: "That's just not right, Mrs. Tull."


One of the other fifth grade teachers started singing a Beyonce song and a student goes, "How do you know who Beyonce is?"


On Friday, a couple of my students started singing "Thriller" in class, so I started dancing to the song. The whole class was very embarassed and then asked me if I knew "The Jerk", "The Ricky Bobby", and other types of dances which I, of course, did not know.
